When I met Roger for the first time being introduced by Ian as "this is my dad Roger", I didn't know everyone called him Mr Bates. I just called him Roger. Being the gentleman he was he didn't say anything. Meeting Roger was always a pleasure and he was genuinely interested in how I was getting on. I always loved the banter we had when being invited to watch the Rugby. I appreciate the effort he made to see me a few weeks before his passing. It was an honour knowing him and he will be sadly missed.
